By Eric Rolshoven, MBA, CFP®
We all have those moments in our lives that help to shape us into who we will become. For me, one of my earliest defining moments was seeing my dedicated parents work to give their three young sons a good life. Both of my parents were teachers who were committed to growing the young minds in their care. I witnessed my parents navigate complex financial and lifestyle decisions when my mom made the decision to stay home with us kids and we became a single-income household. Despite both of my parents’ hard work, even with my dad eventually becoming a school principal, we just didn’t have as much money as before.
This was my first real-world lesson on the financial impacts of multifaceted lifestyle decisions. I decided then to make financial security a priority of mine so that one day I could have a comfortable lifestyle, pursue my hobbies, and live on my own terms. I bring that same passion to my clients so that together we can sustainably meet their immediate needs and work toward their long-term dreams.
First Career Steps
Even though I discovered my desire for financial security when I was young, it took me a while to figure out how to share my passion with others. After graduating from the University of Montana in 1981, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, I spent 8 years working with the U.S. Department of Forestry. I climbed my way up from a field technician to a crew boss and eventually became the owner of my own company, Rolshoven Consulting, where we bid on forest services. During my time with the U.S. Department of Forestry, I went back to the University of Montana and earned an MBA with an emphasis in finance. This accomplishment allowed me to move into the world of financial advising, where I’ve spent the last 30 years growing my skills and expertise.
Building My Career
I began my financial advisory career by building a wealth of knowledge in everything from retirement and educational planning, wealth management, tax and estate planning, investments, financial planning, insurance advice, to portfolio management. Over 25 years later, with invaluable expertise and experience under my belt, I realized that I was missing something in my career: a more personal touch.
I wanted to hear people’s stories, walk with them through decisions, and help them accomplish their goals. That’s why I launched Treasure State Retirement Planning.
